Environmental Awareness

People have become more interested and concerned about their environment in recent years. This environmental awareness is not just concerned with things like “saving the whale” and preventing trees being cut down. These things are certainly headline grabbing and important in themselves, but environmental awareness is more fundamental than that.

Ideally people should live in harmony with their environment. This does not just mean people that live in the country, but wherever they live, be it in the countryside or the city. In fact it is probably more important for people living in the city.

Our environment is probably the biggest external influence on our behaviour. If we live in a poor build environment then it will adversely affect our behaviour. This is seen in the slum dwellings built in the Victorian era which were breeding grounds for disease, crime and vice. This led to the slum clearances in the twentieth century. These clearances were well meaning but some would argue what replaced them was, if anything, even worse.

What replaced the slums were out of town estates and high rise apartments. Though built with the best of intentions, the way they were planned took away the one thing that the slums had going for them: community. The planning of the new estates made any sense of community to develop. Now even these new estates, built in the 1960s and 1970s, are being knocked down with new communities being built on a more human scale. People are now more environmentally aware; lessons have been learned.
