A branch of engineering that ordinary people notice more than any other is construction. The construction industry shapes the very environment we live in, and as most people now live in cities rather that the country side, this is more pervasive now than at any other time in history.

Construction is not just the big projects like a corporate headquarters for a band, but also the small, but important things like the homes we live in. In fact it is probably the small things, how our homes are constructed, that has the biggest impact on our everyday lives. If we are happy with our homes and we live in a nice environment, we don’t have damp running down the walls, we don’t have subsidence and our roof stays on during heavy storms, then we are more likely to be happy and content with our life. When our homes are constructed properly then we are happy.
Unfortunately, the houses and apartments people live in have not always complied with the highest standards of construction and it is always the poor who suffer. In the Victorian era there was a massive migration of people to the cities and there was a need for a great number of cheap buildings to be constructed to house, mainly poor, people. These building were erected with not much thought to safety, comfort or hygiene and quickly became slum dwellings, massively overcrowded and a breeding ground for crime and vice.

Thankfully that was a long time ago and now we have building construction standards to comply with, so the lesson has been learned that the environment we build for ourselves and inhabit has a great influence on our behaviour.
